Mourinho Slams Referee After “Painful” Penalty Defeat
Jose Mourinho has hit out at match official Andre Marriner ‘s performance during Tottenham’s third straight Premier League defeat, against Chelsea at home on Thursday, 4 February.
Frustrated, Mourinho criticised the referee’s conduct during the match. Marriner offered Chelsea a penalty shot – which helped to secure the Spurs’ defeat.
The penalty was awarded after Eric Dier fouled Chelsea forward Timo Werner in the first half, and Jorginho dispatched the spot kick straight into the net.
During the post-match interview, Mourinho revealed that he struggled to accept the penalty decision. He said: “It’s a penalty that is difficult to accept…It’s a bit painful.
The Portuguese tactician also disclosed that he had expressed his dissatisfaction to Marriner about the way he officiated the game.
He said: “I told him [Marriner] something that he knows already. I consider him to be one of the best referees in the Premier League and I care for him.”
He added: “He’s a referee that I have big admiration for. That gives me probably a good position to tell him that I didn’t like his performance.”
